Library Facility Charge ( July 19, 2012)
The Wadleigh Memorial Library Trustees request that the Board of Selectmen charge the Community Facilities Committee with reviewing our proposed expansion and renovation project. The Trustees would also request that the Committee stay involved in seeing this project to its fulfillment through to the Town Meeting in March, 2014-2015. While there is a general consensus in Milford that an addition to the library is much needed, getting a bond issue passed in this current economy will require a lot of hard work on behalf of all the Stakeholders.
To accomplish a successful bond issue, we propose the following:
We would request that the CFC take the time to review and evaluate our current plan for an addition and renovation to the Wadleigh Memorial Library. Our current proposal represents countless hours and over three years of hard work by the Trustees. We welcome the Committee's feedback and critiques. We are now in the position to have our plan read by other community influencers to ensure we are still on the right track, and that our project best serves the community.
We would also request that the CFC give us advice on fundraising. While we understand an expansion and renovation to the library will certainly mean the passing of a bond issue, we are willing to pitch in with fundraising to make this project as affordable to the taxpayers as possible.
Phase II: Completed by July 2013
Once the BOS has approved our expansion and renovation plans, we request that the CFC assist us in getting cost data and designs for the project. Our current proposal does have a cost and architectural plan attached to it, but we would request feedback from the Committee using our most current data. The knowledge of the CFC members - in planning, site and building construction - would be beneficial as we proceed. The goal is to develop an expansion proposal that the CFC and library Trustees mutually agree on for recommendation to the Board of Selectmen.
Phase III: Completed by December 2013
A bond issue cannot be passed successfully without the support of the community. We request that the CFC provide their expertise in advising us on how to get the public to support the expansion and renovation project at the library.
We request that the CFC assist us in putting together an informational package and marketing materials as we embark on our effort to show the public the importance of the library's services.
We will stage an Open House and informational meeting for the public with all the Stakeholders participating prior to the Deliberative Session. we will visit local service clubs (Rotary, Lions, etc.) for speaking engagements. We will have materials at the voting place entryway (to the extent permissible) to inform voters we may have missed in earlier presentations.
The above list is not intended to be all-inclusive, but an outline of what could be done to successfully pass a bond issue for an expansion and renovation project at the Wadleigh Memorial Library.
